(Nov. 1) The largest grower of vine-ripened greenhouse tomatoes in New England has hired a vice president of quality assurance.

Mark Queenan took the post at Madison, Maine-based Backyard Farms on Oct. 31.

Queenan comes to Backyard from packaged food giant Nestle, where he was the director of quality assurance. He has held similar positions at Compass Group North America, Au Bon Pain and H.J. Heinz.

Queenan has more than 20 years of experience in the food industry, with specializations in sanitation, food safety, environmental health and product analysis, said Backyard co-founder Paul Sellew.

In January, Backyard began harvesting tomatoes in an environmentally friendly, 1 million-square-foot-greenhouse. The facility gives Backyard’s New England customers access to a year-round supply of locally grown, vine-ripened tomatoes, Sellew said.

Founded in 2005, Backyard sells tomatoes under the Backyard Beauties label.
