(April 7, 4:22 p.m.) California Giant Berry Farms continues to promote its better-health mission, converting part of its Watsonville, Calif., corporate headquarters into a fitness center.

The company also hired a certified personal fitness trainer to design workout programs for employees.

Company owners made the move to provide the opportunity for the staff to exercise around their work schedules in order promote a healthful lifestyle.

“This was the first day, and we had a trainer in all morning to train people on all the equipment on how to do cardio versus strength and set up a routine based on personal goals,” Cindy Jewell, director of marketing, said April 7. “It was kind of a walk-the-walk move. For the last few years, we’ve been talking about health and fitness and how our berries are one element of a healthy lifestyle, so we figured it all starts right here.”

The room includes a treadmill, elliptical trainers, recumbent bicycle, universal machine, weights and benches.

“It’s a morale booster, and everyone is excited about it,” she said. “It makes you feel good about the company and the people you work for when they invest back in you.”

The company’s health and fitness marketing focus includes certification by the American Heart Association, an alignment with Sesame Street’s Healthy Habits for Life initiative and sponsorship of a cycling team.
