Mark Murai, president of the California Strawberry Commission, is scheduled to speak on exports at the Monterey Bay International Trade Association luncheon with Congressman Sam Farr in Monterey, Calif.

The May 18 luncheon is set for noon to 1:45 p.m. in the Crazy Horse Restaurant at Bay Park Hotel.

California strawberry exports, both fresh and frozen, weighed in at 276 million pounds and $341 million last year, according to a news release. Exports accounted for 23% of the state’s production.

“These overseas markets provide a crucial outlet for local growers during summer when an abundance of other fruits, such as peaches, apricots, melons (and) cherries compete in the domestic marketplace,” Murai said in the release.

Farr, D-Carmel, reports annually on the National Export Initiative at the event. Monterey County Business Council is a co-sponsor.

Among the other speakers expected is Susan Arcady Barich, director of the Project 17 Agricultural Technology Regional Innovation Cluster.
