Using the Oct.18-20 Fresh Summit as a foot in the door, a Mexican fresh and processed avocado marketer is looking to expand sales efforts in the U.S.

Representatives of Cupanda, a 59-year old sales cooperative composed of growers from the Tacámbaro region in Michoacan, Mexico, will take part in the Produce Marketing Association’s Fresh Summit in New Orleans. The company has about 260 grower members who harvest about 6,200 metric tons of avocados annually, according to FreshPlaza.com. The company now exports most of its fresh avocados and guacamole to Central America, Canada and Europe, according to the report.

The company, which offers both convention and organic fruit, will exhibit as part of the Mexican pavilion at PMA.

Enough already!!! As a California avocado grower I would like to thank the US government and Mexican imports for ruining the California Market. When I became a grower in 2003, the Super Bowl was a big promotion for us. Since 2007 our market hasn't been a viable market until April. We have about a four and a half moth window to sell our fruit and the majority of that window is inundated with imports. Mexico should be allowed in the US, but only as a supplemental product.

The current product maybe, but the product being shipped mid california season is absolute garbage. My friends and family outside California refuse to buy Mexican fruit because of the quality. Those imports are damaging the industry and reputation of avocados. I've seen Mexican Hass avocados that are red!!! Last time I checked, they were supposed to be green. so don't tell me the fruit is superior. That is a farce!
