Levin adds herbs, vegetables
M. Levin & Co. Inc. added a line of greenhouse herbs and vegetables.
The Philadelphia-based distributor sells cello cucumbers, tomatoes and other greenhouse products.
Product demand remains strong, said Mark Levin, co-owner.
Levin began distributing the products last year.
The wholesaler has also added more trucks and drivers to better serve its growing customer base.
Levin expanded its tractor-trailer fleet from six to 12 and increased its straight truck roster from three to six, Levin said.
The company, founded in 1906, is also planning to expand its sales personnel on the Philadelphia Wholesale Produce Market as well as hire more outside sales representatives, he said.
It is also planning to add another dozen ripening rooms to the 36 it uses to mature bananas, avocados and other items, Levin said.
Founded in 1906, Levin distributes a full line of fruits, vegetables and tropicals to retailers and foodservice distributors from northern Virginia to Toronto and west to Cincinnati.
Procacci opens Miami import office
Procacci Bros. Sales Corp. opened a buying office in Miami to coordinate imports of specialty produce.
Earlier in the year, the Philadelphia-based distributor started the office in the city’s warehouse district east of Miami International Airport.
The operation includes personnel that work with the area’s importers.
The staff travels to Caribbean and Latin American growing regions to source specialty produce, including roots, yucca, calabaza and malanga, said Mike Maxwell, president.
It’s important that distributors maintain representation at the importing areas to properly evaluate product to make sure it meets customers’ needs, he said.
Vena expands space on market
John Vena Inc. expanded operations on the Philadelphia Wholesale Produce Market.
Previously, the Philadelphia-based distributor of specialty produce had sold product through five units.
In May, Vena expanded to six units by acquiring an open neighboring stall.
That space was previously occupied by Philadelphia-based A. Vassallo Inc., which relocated to another market unit, said John Vena Jr., Vena’s president.
“We needed the extra space for some services we do for our customers,” Vena said.
“It’s allowing us to better serve our customers and provides us a little more room to spread out our operation, which was becoming a little cramped.”
