Empire State apples helping fight cancer

Shoppers purchasing New York apples in March are helping fund cancer research.

New York Apple Association New York regional retailers are participating in the promotion, in which the Fishers-based New York Apple Association plans to donate $25,000 to support pediatric cancer research in the state. The fundraiser highlights apples health benefits, according to a news release.

Participating retailers have in-store displays of the state’s top varieties and are advertising the campaign in sales circulars, according to the release.

The retailers include A&P, Acme, Big M, Big Y, Fairway Foods, Foodtown, Gristedes, Key Food, Kings, Krasdale, Market Basket, Mars, Nice & Easy, Olean Wholesale, Pathmark, Price Chopper, ShopRite, Shurfine, Stop & Shop, Tops, Waldbaums, Wegmans, Western Beef and Whole Foods.

In its 11th year, the program has donated nearly $323,000 to American Cancer Society and to the Coaches vs. Cancer Program.
