Lipman is introducing a new round red tomato variety.

The crimson queen variety features high flavor, a bright red interior and higher brix levels, according to a news release from the Immokalee, Fla.-based company.

LiipmanThe variety has a durable skin and longer shelf life making it popular with foodservice operators and consumers, according to the release.

It’s the latest variety released from Lipman’s research and development group.

“We know that round tomatoes typically have a reputation for durability rather than taste — and that increased flavor is normally associated with higher sugar content varieties like grape, cherry and heirloom-type tomatoes,” Mark Barineau, Lipman’s director of seed development and research and development, said in the release. “However, with the crimson queen, we’re changing that by introducing a round tomato that doesn’t sacrifice flavor for function.”

Thanks to the crimson gene, the variety also possesses higher lycopene levels, according to the release.

Lipman officials plan to discuss the variety with at its booth, No. 2957, during the Oct. 18-20 Produce Marketing Association’s Fresh Summit 2013 expo in New Orleans.
