South Haven, Mich., mayor Bob Burr helped kick off the state’s harvest with a visit to local grower Tom Bodtke’s farm, according to a news release from Naples, Fla.-based Naturipe Farms, which markets berries from Grand Junction, Mich.-based MBG Marketing co-op.
“The weather earlier this year was excellent, with moderate temperatures in the spring that resulted in strong growth of our blueberry bushes,” Bodtke said in the release. “The growing conditions were ideal during the flowering stage with an active bee population, resulting in a good crop set and large individual berries.”
The next few weeks, Bodtke said, will be the most critical as growers enter the peak of the harvest.
“We’ll have to depend on Mother Nature to help us through the end of the harvest.”
