The Roma crop is expected to be ready for harvest beginning in August.Already in the second full week of shipping vine-ripened tomatoes from Oceanside Pole fields in California, Harry Singh Jr. expects to continue producing at full volumes through October.
The Oceanside, Calif.,-based West Coast Tomato Growers planted additional acres of vine-ripes for this season because of increasing demand, according to a news release. The grower doubled the number of Roma tomatoes for this season because of similar demands.
Roma harvest is expected to begin in August and run through November. Dick Keim, marketing coordinator for West Coast Tomato Growers, said in May the heaviest production overall will last July through October then naturally taper off.
“Over the last 70 years, Mr. Singh’s family has perfected the art and science of growing tomato plants on poles, yielding uniquely good-tasting and long-lasting tomatoes,” Mark Smith, the senior sales representative who leads The Oppenheimer Group’s marketing strategy for Oceanside Pole, said in the release.
The 2014 season marks the third year the grower and marketer have worked together. Oppenheimer staff relocates to Oceanside during the season to more closely work with staff at West Coast tomato to meet customer needs, according to the release.
“Together, we’ve refined our color staging practices to assure the tomatoes we ship will match our customers’ arrival specifications every time,” Smith said in the release.
