Ontario issues guides on pests, production practices

Courtesy Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs The “Vegetable Production Recommendations” from the Ontario provincial government, known to growers as “Pub. 363,” is being replaced with two guides, one published this year and the other scheduled to come off the press in 2013.

Now available is the “Vegetable Crop Protection Guide” from the Ontario Ministry of Agricultural, Food and Rural Affairs. A companion publication, “Ontario Field Vegetable Guide,” is scheduled to be released in March next year, according to the ministry’s website.

The guide now available is the ministry’s directive for pest control for commercial field vegetable growers. Features of the new crop protection guide include updated tables listing pest control products divided by commodity. Activity tables in the guide summarize the effect of the products on key pests.

The field vegetable guide due out next year is considered a companion resource. It will contain more detailed information on crop production, growing practices and other topics.

Until the field vegetable guide is published in 2013, the ministry directs growers to continue to use Publication 363, the “Vegetable Production Recommendations,” for anything not covered in the “Vegetable Crop Protection Guide.”

The new guides are $15 each. Copies of Pub. 363 are available for the reduced price of $5. The new guides will be available in English and French.
