About 187 million cwt. of U.S. potatoes had yet to be shipped as of Feb. 1, 4% more than a year ago at the same time.
Potatoes in storage accounted for 49% of the 2011 fall production in the nation’s top 13 producing states, down 1% from Feb. 1, 2011, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service’s Feb. 15 potato stocks report.
At 193 million cwt., potato disappearance as of Feb. 1 was 9% higher than the year before, according to the report.
Season-to-date shrink and loss, at 19.3 million cwt., was up 16% from Feb. 1, 2011.
Stocks in industry leader Idaho were 67.5 million cwt. on Feb. 1, up from 62.5 million cwt. a year ago. Stocks also were up in Washington, Oregon, Colorado, Wisconsin and Minnesota. Stocks were down from last year in North Dakota and Maine.
