Cherries grown in a Spanish greenhouse will be available in North America for the first time this year.
Cherries Glamour cherries, grown in northeast Spain by S.A.T. Edoa, should arrive in eastern Canada March 15 or March 16, said Maurice Cameron, president of Hanford, Calif.-based Flavor Tree Fruit Co. LLC, the exclusive North American marketer of the fruit.
The cherries will only be available on a limited basis for about four weeks at high-end retailers in eastern Canada this year, Cameron said.
By 2014 or 2015, Flavor Tree hopes to have the fruit approved for sale in the U.S.
Three different varieties ship under the Cherries Glamour brand, Cameron said. The greenhouse they are grown is both heated and cooled for optimal growing conditions, he said.
The fruit is characterized by large size, crunchiness and high brix levels (in the 18-22 range), Cameron said.
Greenhouse cherries also are grown in France, Bulgaria and Japan, but Cherries Glamour are available earlier than fruit from other countries, Cameron said.
S.A.T. Edoa ships Cherries Glamour cherries to Russia, China, England, France, the United Arab Emirates and other markets, he said.
