About 8.1 billion pounds of apples are expected to be produced in the U.S. in 2012, down from 9.4 billion pounds last year, according to an Aug. 10 report from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service.
Losses in Michigan and New York, caused by spring freezes, more than offset gains in industry leader Washington and in Pennsylvania, the fourth-largest producer.
Michigan is expected to produce just 105 million pounds of apples this year, down from 985 million pounds in 2011. New York’s volume is expected to fall from 1.2 billion to 590 million pounds.
About 5.7 billion pounds are expected from Washington, up from 5.4 billion in 2011. Pennsylvania’s volume is expected to increase from 458 million to 481 million pounds.
The industry’s fifth-largest producing state, Virginia, also is expecting an increase, from 220 million pounds in 2011 to 230 million pounds this year.
