Bushmans’ buys half of Discovery Garden’s

ANAHEIM, Calif. — Bushmans’ Inc., Rosholt, Wis., has purchased half of Discovery Garden’s LLC, Oakdale, Calif., a solely owned subsidiary of Oakdale-based California Oregon Seed Inc.

Bushmans’ announced the acquisition at the Produce Marketing Association’s Fresh Summit.

Although Discovery Garden’s has successfully marketed its proprietary Sierra Gold and Sierra Rose potato varieties in California, Washington and Oregon, the company has not been as successful as it would like to be in penetrating markets in other parts of the country, said Amanda Lee, assistant sales and marketing manager. She expects the partnership to change that.

“We think it will be positive for both companies,” she said, because Bushmans’ will be able to sell Discovery Garden’s products and Discovery Garden’s will be able to offer all the potato varieties Bushmans’ has.

Some Discovery Garden’s customers have asked for more than the two proprietary varieties the company sells, Lee said. Thanks to the partnership, the company can fill buyer requests for russet, white or other varieties.

“They’re innovative, and we’re innovative, so we know it will be a good pairing for the two companies,” she said.

“We’re proud to be co-owners of this superb company,” Mike Carter, Bushmans’ chief executive officer, said in a news release. “We at Bushmans’ have always been impressed with the hard work and leadership exhibited by Discovery Garden’s, and the fact that they have partnered with some of the best growers to produce the highest-quality product from coast to coast.”

“We’ve always had confidence that the Sierra Gold and Sierra Rose varieties will be embraced by consumers, and we believe partnering with Bushmans’ Inc. will help our already strong marketing efforts,” Rob Campbell, president of California Oregon Seed, said in the release.

California Oregon Seed was founded 40 years ago by S.A. Camp Cos. of Bakersfield, Calif., according to the release.
