An international culinary organization has honored Del Monte Fresh Produce for its fresh-cut pineapple.

Coral Gables, Fla.-based Del Monte Fresh NA Inc. said the International Taste and Quality Institute had awarded the company with a 2009 Superior Taste Award for its Gold Extra Sweet pineapple.

The institute assembles a panel of a dozen European culinary professionals each year to test foods and beverages.

The Brussels, Belgium-based institute recognizes and promotes high-quality tasting food and drink, according to the release.

The institute tested nearly 800 products.  Judges analyzed products without packaging or identification and reviewed the food based on overall feelings as well as appearance, smell, texture and flavor.

I know Del Monte is a power house on pines, but now 3 years after this article was published, I see an alarming presence of Dole pineapples on the shelves in the Midwest (Kroger, Costco, Sam's, Wal-Mart, Marsh, Whole Foods, Aldi, Super Target, Jungle Jim, Trader Joe's). Dole is becoming a powerhouse on Pineapples. http://producedepartmentreport.blogspot.com/
