Florida should produce about 143 million boxes of oranges in 2010-11, according to the latest U.S. Department of Agriculture estimate.

That’s 3 million boxes less than the October estimate, according to a news release from Lakeland-based Florida Citrus Mutual.

Grapefruit volumes were expected to fall slightly, from 20 million boxes in October to 19.6 million boxes in December.

The lower figures weren’t a surprise, given reports of smaller fruit, Michael Sparks, Florida Citrus Mutual’s executive vice president and chief executive officer, said in the release.
