Louisiana sweet potato growers hurt by rains in 2009 must apply for federal disaster aid by Dec. 9.
Aid is available under the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Crop Assistance Program. Sweet potato growers are eligible for up to $155.41 per acre of affected land, according to a news release from the Louisiana Department of Agriculture & Forestry.
Despite heavy rains in some growing areas in September and October 2009, Louisiana’s sweet potato production rose from 1.1 million cwt. in 2008 to 1.6 million last year.
Mississippi was the sweet potato-producing state hit hardest by the rains. Volumes there fell from 3.4 million cwt. in 2008 to 1.3 million cwt. in 2009.
