Mediterranean fruit flies have been eradicated from Palm Beach County, according to the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.

The department announced the news Sept. 1, three months after flies were found in a residential area of Boca Raton.

The area is less than 10 miles away from the nearest commercial vegetable fields.

The pests are considered eradicated when 60 days pass without a new finding.

Mediterranean fruit flies attack more than 250 fruits, vegetables and nuts and are considered one of the most devastating species of fruit flies.

In an effort to contain the flies, the department placed traps in an 81-square-mile area around each spot where the pests were found.

The eradication in Palm Beach County was one of the fastest in Florida’s history, Ag Commissioner Charles Bronson said in a news release.
