The U.S. has given the green light for the importation of fresh sweet limes from Mexico.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service made the announcement in the Sept. 17 edition of the Federal Register.

The ruling clears the way for the immediate issuance of permits for imports.

An APHIS pest risk analysis determined that the use of phytosanitary measures would sufficiently mitigate the risk of Mexican sweet limes introducing pests or noxious weeds into the U.S.

Under the ruling, Mexican limes exported to the U.S. must be irradiated and accompanied with a phytosanitary certificate.
