Ohio State University has received a $2 million grant for greenhouse tomato research.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture grant will help the university’s Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center develop new greenhouse disease control and food safety technologies, according to an Ohio State news release.

The grant is part of the USDA’s Specialty Crop Research Initiative, which was established by the 2008 Farm Bill.

Greenhouse tomato growers face different disease and other food safety challenges than growers of field-grown tomatoes, Sally Miller, an Ohio State vegetable pathologist, said in the release.
