Pennsylvania agriculture officials are promoting the stateâs fall apples and numerous farmers markets that sell the fruit through a new website.
The Harrisburg-based Pennsylvania Apple Marketing Board, a part of the stateâs agriculture department, is directing consumers to www.pennsylvaniaapples.org to locate farmers markets in the state that feature fresh apples.
âJust as the state of Pennsylvania is diverse in terms of people and geography, so are the farm markets,â Karin Rodriguez, the apple marketing programâs executive director, said in a news release. âDepending where you go, a visit to the local market might also include wagon rides through the orchard, a petting zoo, free concerts, educational programs and more.â
Some of Pennsylvaniaâs bigger farmers markets have become family destinations with activities scheduled throughout the day, she said, while both the larger and smaller markets are run by fifth-, sixth- and sometimes seventh-generation growers, Rodriguez said.
Rodriguez said Pennsylvania is the fourth-largest apple producing state, growing 440 million pounds a year.
The website features information on production, apple varieties, recipes, farm stand locations as well as processed apple products.
