Sakata acquires Reed’s Seeds cabbage genetics

(Feb. 2, 11:44 a.m.) Cortland, N.Y.-based Reed’s Seeds is selling its cabbage genetics to Yokohama, Japan-based Sakata Seed Corp. with the hopes varieties are planted nationwide and beyond.

Sakata Seed America, Inc., Morgan Hill, Calif., and Alf Christianson Seed Company, Mt. Vernon, Wash., two subsidiaries of Sakata Seed Corp., announced the purchase of Reed’s Seeds cabbage genetics in early January. The purchase includes all existing commercial varieties as well as the genetics from Reed’s Seeds’ breeding programs.

Reed’s Seeds cabbage program includes hybrid cabbage consisting of fresh market green and red, savoy, processing and storage types. A Sakata spokesman said the partnership will produce future hybrids capable of being developed into superior cabbage varieties for growers around the world.

“(The Reed’s Seeds varieties that have been) commercially available have been extremely successful, especially in the northeast quadrant of the U.S. and eastern Canada,” said Atlee Burpee, eastern sales manager for Sakata Seed America, Inc. “What we can provide is broader market penetration, so that we’ll be able to trial (new cabbage varieties) and give it more broad exposure.”
