(Sept. 21) Texas growers with the Edinburg Citrus Association were the first in the Rio Grande Valley to start picking navel oranges last week as the season got off to one of its earliest starts in years, The (McAllen) Monitor reported.

“The fruit is looking good, and we’re anticipating a good season,” Paula Fouchek, marketing director for the Edinburg Citrus Association, said in the article.

The valley is known for its grapefruit, but growers still picked more than 45,000 tons of oranges last year, the Monitor noted.

The grapefruit harvest should start in mid-October, and the valencia orange harvest is expected to begin in mid-winter. Picking typically continues until May or June.
