(Feb. 4) After years of working with fresh produce processors and foodservice operations, Dave Murphy has joined Boskovich Farms Inc., Oxnard, Calif., as director of food safety and quality systems.

Murphy will oversee the company’s continuing development of food safety programs.

“I definitely feel I have an advantage in that I have a good sense of knowing and understanding what the customers want,” he said. “I speak their language.”

Murphy, who has been in the produce industry for more than 30 years, was most recently with Highland Park, Ill., produce procurement firm Danaco Solutions LLC. He was also vice president of quality for foodservice at Ready Pac Foods Inc., Irwindale, Calif., and had several roles at Irvine, Calif.-based Yum! Brands Inc., which owns the Taco Bell and KFC chains.

“My biggest challenge is to sell the (food safety) programs that are already in place to the customers, to make them more aware of what we do at Boskovich Farms,” he said.

That the company is family owned and operated was a selling point in his move to Boskovich Farms.

“They were my No. 1 company when I was a buyer,” Murphy said. “It’s great to be able to deal directly with those who actually do the growing.”

Murphy said he plans to be active in industry groups such as the Produce Marketing Association, Newark, Del., and the United Fresh Produce Association, Washington, D.C. His experience on both sides of the fresh produce supply chain, he said, may help to solve disputes between producers and customers.
