As part of an ongoing partnership with Dole Food Co. Inc., a leading seed company is setting up shop at Dole’s North Carolina-based research facility.
Creve Coeur, Mo.-based Monsanto Co. will develop its own research facility at the David H. Murdock Research Institute in Kannapolis, N.C., according to a news release.
Murdock is the chairman of Westlake Village, Calif.-based Dole.
Monsanto has signed a long-term lease to establish facilities focused on studying the taste and nutritional composition of vegetables.
In 2009, Monsanto announced a five-year collaboration with Dole to develop vegetable varieties focused on four specific attributes: flavor, texture, aroma and nutrition.
The companies plan to focus on breeding new varieties of broccoli, cauliflower, lettuce and spinach.
