Author Michael Pollan signs books and accepts gifts from 1,200 people attending a May 20 book-signing event promoting his book, "In Defense of Food," and the June 14 opening of  the Heartland Harvest Garden at Kansas City's Powell Gardens.

The new garden is billed as the nation’s largest edible landscape and showcases thousands of plants that can be grown by local producers.

Pollan told a crowd of more than 1,200 to be wary of nutritional claims because they can be turned on their head easily. Instead, he said, “Get off processed food, and eat more plants.”
