(May 2, 11:18 a.m.) Eurofresh Inc. has again been honored by independent judging organization ChefsBest as the nation’s best tomato producer.

ChefsBest has named the company’s Eurofresh Farms-branded products America’s Best-Tasting Tomatoes more than 10 years in a row. Mark Cassius, director of sales and marketing, said the company’s Brilliant variety tomatoes on the vine have won the award five years in a row.

“It’s a great tomato,” he said. “It has very consistent fruit size, and the vines are thick and strong.”

Cassius said Eurofresh expects to ship about 125 million pounds of Brilliant tomatoes this year. The year-round product is available in 11-, 12- and 13-pound bulk cases as well as in 2-pound clamshells and consumer bags ranging from one pound to 24 ounces, depending on retailer preference.

The company intends to incorporate information about the award on its consumer packs as a part of a label redesign planned for the second half of the year.

Cassius said Eurofresh’s winning streak in the competition started with beefsteak tomatoes more than a decade ago.

“That’s how we grew the business,” he said. “We eventually migrated into (tomatoes on the vine) because that’s where consumer preference seemed to be.”

Eurofresh stopped growing beefsteaks for a few years, but the item is back in the company’s lineup. Eurofresh announced plans this past winter to source beefsteak tomatoes and colored bell peppers from growers in Canada and Mexico.

Cassius said the company expects to ship about 700,000 boxes of those products this year under the Garden Fresh Selections label.

Eurofresh recently introduced Bella Bites, which Cassius described as “grape-like” tomatoes. The year-round product is available in 1½-pound clamshells.
