W.B. “Tubby” Crews, a longtime Florida produce wholesaler, died Nov. 11. He was 93.

Crews started his career in the 1930s, buying fruits and vegetables in North Carolina and selling them on the Tampa, Fla., terminal market. Later, Crews and partner Andres Garcia imported produce from Cuba until Fidel Castro assumed power.

In 1961, Crews and Garcia founded Tampa-based Crews & Garcia, a wholesaler that grew to become the main supplier of produce to the Winn Dixie supermarket chain.

Crews’ last day in the office was June 3, when he was 92, said Cookie Garcia, who operated the company with Crews until 2007, when his son, Louis Garcia, took his place.

“He came into work every day, he never officially retired,” Cookie Garcia said.

Crews’ daughter, Terry Crews, also operates the company.

Crews is survived by his wife, Mary Jo; daughters Patsey Crews, Terry Crews and Gail Militello; and a step-daughter and several grandchildren.
