The Los Angeles-based company began shipping organic peeled baby carrots, beets, potatoes, turnips, rutabagas and other value-added vegetables to foodservice customers in about late June, said Bruce Hoffman, general manager and managing partner.
“We’ve been doing conventional since 1993, but organic is a fast-growing category that people are asking for,” Hoffman said.
California Specialty also is offering organic versions of its heart- and star-shaped cut beets and potatoes and other specialty-cut products.
Product is packed in 5-pound bags, each bag containing 150 half-ounce units, Hoffman said. The company hopes to expand the line into retail.
California Specialty is sourcing its organic vegetables from Duncan Family Farms, which grows in the Santa Maria, Calif., region and, in the winter, in Goodyear, Ariz., Hoffman said.
California Specialty also is sourcing lettuce and other non-specialty-cut vegetables from Duncan.
