Eatin’ o’ the green just in time for wearin’ o’ the green

Demand for the green version of the fruit of the tomato vine has been increasing in recent years, Nature Fresh officials said in a news release, especially in high-end restaurants. They said on March 10 workers would likely begin harvesting the green beefsteaks in less than a week.

This marks the second year the greenhouse vegetable company has marketed its Fried Green Tomato Kit. The kit includes green beefsteak tomatoes and the fixings to cook up the old-time Southern favorite, said Ray Wowryk, director of business development.

Wowryk said the kits have a retail target price of $3.99, but Nature Fresh will offer introductory promotion pricing for retailers interested in introducing the all-in-one kits this season.

Ten-pound, display-ready bulk boxes with colorful graphics are available for the Nature Fresh green beefsteak tomatoes, which have their own Price Look-Up code.

“Foodservice distributors and retailers have experienced increased demand for the green fruit and continue to see consumer interest rise on this old-time classic,” Wowryk said.

Side dishes featuring green tomatoes are becoming more popular on restaurant menus, and the green beefsteaks are also great for salsas, chutney and salads, according to information on the Nature Fresh website.

Wowryk said Nature Fresh uses packaging designed to ensure the fruit arrives in full green color.
