MONTEREY, Calif. — The emerging popularity of button-lock clamshell packs for fresh produce applications is something people can’t seem to keep their mouths buttoned about.

Watsonville, Calif.-based Sambrailo Packaging, for one, hopes to capitalize on increasing demand for button-lock packs.

Jim Scattini, vice president of sales and marketing, showed off new clamshell concepts July 28 at the Produce Marketing Association Foodservice Expo.

“We will be coming out with more button-lock clamshells at the request of our customers,” Scattini said. “They provide a little more security.”

The company is focusing on an 18-ounce size clamshell but plans to also offer other sizes, which Scattini did not disclose.

While Sambrailo is primarily known for berry packaging, it’s now trying to become the packaging solutions company for other fresh produce commodities, such as sugar snap peas, lettuce and peppers.

“We’re trying to get people to think outside the box and look at other items these clamshells would be good for,” Scattini said.

Sambrailo is also producing more clamshells in Mexico for its Mexican business, Scattini said, to offer better turnaround times and more competitive pricing for its customers south of the border.
