LENEXA, Kan. — Business should be a pleasure next May in Palm Springs, Calif., as The Packer opens its new West Coast Produce Expo regional event.

West Coast Produce Expp“We’ve had success with our Midwest Expo in Chicago, and we’ve found there’s demand for a similar event on the West Coast,” said Shannon Shuman, publisher of The Packer and Produce Retailer magazine.

“There’s a strong trend with regional events because they provide value for attendees and exhibitors,” he said. “It’s going to be a meeting where you see business and social interactions in an intimate setting.”

West Coast Expo is slated for May 18-20, 2015, in the Hyatt Regency Indian Wells. Shuman said it’s well-timed as the only produce-specific event open to the industry in May, and it’s at the start of the produce-heavy summer season.

The format will be similar to the Midwest event with a one-day expo, a morning of workshop and educational sessions, two evenings of entertainment and golf at the resort.

Shuman said the event will have more than 100 exhibitors, but it’s designed to be a smaller gathering that caters to the buyers in the Western states.

He said research shows there are 235 retail chains based in Western states, and 47 of the top 200 largest retail chains are headquartered in the Western states.

The website, westcoastproduceexpo.com, is now live, and registration is scheduled to open this summer.

This is ridiculous. Do I have to come back from the grave and kick The Packers Ass? Industry does not need another show. Shippers should withdraw subscriptions and advertising from The Packer for these. Not only unnecessary but additional cost and staff time here is beyond ridicule. Is Packer really this desperate?

Seriously? How pathetic. The industry needs another show like it needs a hole in the head. Sad that the Packer can't cut it in the newspaper business and has to resort to this. I predict failure.

The Packer conducted industry surveys that showed there is strong demand for a regional event that brings together produce suppliers and Western buyers. We look forward to playing our part.

Any success in Chicago is likely due to the lack of a local association in the region. The west coast has FPFC and their events---which already fill the niche that this show aims to overfill. I fear The Packer will have great difficulty making this thing fly.

Is The Packer willing to publish its surveys which show a "strong demand" for another trade show? I can't believe results would show the industry wants yet another show. As previous comment mentioned, FPFC is already filling that need quite well.

I guess the overwhelming success of the Midwest Show inspired this event? C'mon Packer.
