Bayer CropScience wants to help children make healthy lunch decisions by partnering with the United Fresh Produce Association to install salad bars in schools.

The Research Triangle, N.C.-based Bayer CropScience plans to donate 10 salad bars this year to select elementary and secondary schools in Florida, California and the Pacific Northwest.

United Fresh Produce AssociationThe contribution is part of the Washington, D.C.-based United Fresh Produce Association Foundation’s efforts to support the Let’s Move Salad Bars to Schools initiative to increase fruit and vegetable consumption through installing salad bars in U.S. schools, according to a news release.

Additionally, Bayer CropScience plans to contribute an 11th salad bar to another U.S. school through a social media campaign called “Give a salad bar.”

Bayer CropScience started that campaign Jan. 30.

As students, parents and friends tweet and retweet the hashtag #GiveASaladBar or pin to GiveASaladBar on Pinterest, Bayer CropScience plans to donate $5 toward the additional salad bar.

“It is gratifying to work with companies, such as Bayer CropScience, that recognize the importance of teaching children about healthy eating,” Tom Stenzel, United Fresh’s president and chief executive officer, said in the release. “These salad bars will enable students to select from a wide variety of fruit and vegetable options each day, providing a personal experience about choices that can shape behavior far beyond the school lunch line, and provide a platform for a lifetime of healthy snack and meal choices.”

A subgroup of Bayer AG responsible for its agricultural business, Bayer CropScience is part of the global Bayer that also works in health care and high-tech materials.
