Christopher Ranch hosts garlic challenge for culinary students

Christopher Ranch is challenging culinary students at three California schools to develop the best dish for a Super Bowl watch party using heirloom garlic.

The Gilroy, Calif.-based company started the Garlic Gridiron Challenge Dec. 1, and is set to accept recipe entries through Jan. 18. Chef educators at the participating schools — the California Culinary Academy, San Francisco; Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts, Los Angeles and the Art Institute of California Orange County — will judge the first round of competition and choose three top recipes from their schools.

After the first round, representatives from Christopher Ranch will add themselves to the judging pool to choose winners of the $500 first-, $200 second- and $100 third-place prizes. The company is also allotting $200 for ingredients, which can be included in prize money if schools choose, according to a news release.

The purpose of the challenge is to help the company establish relationships with students and professors and to raise awareness about fresh garlic varieties, according to the release. The requirements call for five cloves of heirloom garlic in a submitted dish. The company’s chef, Cary Neff, has sensory evaluation data that shows heirloom garlic as more flavorful than Chinese garlic, according to the release.

In keeping with the contest’s theme, the winner Christopher Ranch plans to announce the winner during halftime at the Super Bowl Feb. 7 on the company’s Facebook and Twitter accounts, as well as its California Garlic Blog.
