(April 7, 9:45 a.m.) J&C Tropicals Inc., Miami, started importing garlic directly from China the last week of March.

“We’ve always done garlic, but we have a direct deal with China now,” said Jim Burnette, salesman.

The company, a subsidiary of J&C Enterprises Inc., is marketing white and purple loose garlic, peeled garlic in 1-pound and 5-pound plastic jars, and three packs and five packs of whole white or purple garlic. The products are marketed under the JC label, Burnette said.

Loose garlic is available in 30-pound boxes, five packs of whole garlic come in 45-count boxes, three packs in 80-count boxes, and peeled garlic comes in four-count 5-pound jars and 20-count 1-pound jars.

J&C is starting out with just one container a week, Burnette said. The company moved 26 containers of garlic last year, so its program is already set up to double in volume.

“I was buying from people here who were bringing it in, and now I can sell for what they sold to me,” Burnette said.
