Markon Cooperative, Salinas, Calif., has announced Paul Malcolm of Johnson & Wales University in Charlotte, N.C. as the winner of its local garden scholarship drawing.

Malcolm, an assistant professor at the College of Culinary Arts at the university, was chosen as the winner of the scholarship at the Produce Marketing Association’s Foodservice Conference and Exposition last year, according to a company release.

After months of planning, Malcolm will use the scholarship money to build a mobile greenhouse for the university’s community garden. The university’s student and faculty garden club, The Coop, transformed an inner city lot into the Little Sugar Creek Greenway community garden. The garden is a communal food share group as well as a teaching facility.

The new greenhouse will help propagate plantings and extend the garden’s growing season. The group plans to use the greenhouse to increase fresh produce consumption in the community and to encourage nutritional education in the area, according to the release.
