Bob Gray, chief executive officer of the California Agricultural Leadership Foundation in Salinas, Calif., was named the University of Arizona Honors College Alumnus of the Year.

Seventeen of the Tucscon, Ariz., university’s colleges named one recipient each. They were honored during an Oct. 22 homecoming and 125th anniversary celebration, according to a news release.

Gray, a former chief executive officer of Duda Farm Fresh Foods, is a Yuma, Ariz., native and 1971 honors graduate of the University of Arizona.

A former Marshall scholar, Gray served as a member and then chair of the San Francisco Regional Selection Committee of the Marshall Scholarship for 15 years.

In 2008, he established the Robert P. Gray Endowed Honors Scholarship for an honors student studying in the university’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, increasing the endowment to serve more students each year.

England’s Queen Elizabeth made him an Honorary Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire in May 2010.

The California Agricultural Leadership Foundation moved to Salinas from Sacramento in April 2010.

Its mission is to enhance the long-term viability of California agriculture through leadership development. The foundation pays for two years of classes for leadership participants at four universities: California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo; California State Polytechnic University, Pomona; California State University-Fresno; and the University of California-Davis, worth about $45,000.
