(Dec. 12) The Fresh Produce Association of the America’s committee to find a replacement for president Lee Frankel has finalized a revised job description and is reviewing resumes of some prospects.

The search committee is also working with produce industry officials to find more candidates for Frankel’s position.

Frankel, the FPAA president for more than a decade, announced his resignation just before the FPAA’s annual Nogales (Ariz.) Produce Convention, which took place Nov. 29-Dec. 1. Frankel, who resigned on Nov. 26 to become president and chief executive officer of Salt Lake City-based United Potato Growers of America beginning Jan. 2, has said he will continue to work in his FPAA role until late December.

“Our current staff is highly capable and will keep the association moving forward until we find the right person,” said Bill Sykes, search committee chairman. “Lee Frankel has been an important asset for our industry, and the members of the search committee understand that we have a great responsibility in bringing in a person that will continue to grow the FPAA and the industry as a whole. Our industry faces ever-changing, international issues and challenges. We want to find the right person to meet those challenges.”

On Dec. 4, FPAA members organized the selection committee. Besides Sykes, committee members include: Alicia Martin of Wilson Produce and current FPAA chairwoman, Chris Ciruli of Ciruli Brothers and current FPAA chairman-elect, Martin Ley of Del Campo Supreme, Walter Ram of The Giumarra Companies, Leonardo Tarriba of Farmer’s Best International, and Chuck Thomas of Thomas Produce.

A full list of the FPAA president’s job responsibilities, experience, and skills is available on the FPAA website at www.freshfrommexico.com, under “Press Room.”

The FPAA is a nonprofit trade association headquartered in Nogales representing more than 100 U.S. member companies involved in growing, packing, sales and transportation of fresh fruits and vegetables grown in Mexico.
