The units reduce overall fuel costs and emissions by eliminating the need for a separate diesel engine to power refrigeration units. Produce shippers concerned about the rising cost of diesel fuel can reduce their costs by switching delivery trucks to electric refrigeration units, and Aura Systems Inc. plans to offer larger units later this year that will cool full-size semi trailers.
AuraGen units are available now for smaller box trucks up to about 40 feet long. The units cool with electricity and are powered by the trucks’ main engines, eliminating the need for a separate diesel-powered unit.
Cipora Lavut, vice president of public relations for the El Segundo, Calif., company said eliminating the extra diesel engine not only saves on fuel costs but reduces overall emissions.
Viper versions of the units were installed on U.S. military vehicles in the past two years for use in Afghanistan. The commercial versions are in use by various food companies, Lavut said.
“We are working on a larger version that will be big enough to cool full-sized semi trailers,” Lavut said Feb. 14, adding that the new version should be available by the end of 2012.
In addition to reducing overall fuel costs and emissions, the AuraGen refrigeration units have much lower maintenance costs, Lavut said. According to the company’s website — www.aurasystems.com — the only routine maintenance required is the annual replacement of a serpentine belt.
