Bosch Packaging Technology has expanded its packaging testing facility.

The Waiblingen, Germany-based Bosch invested $850,000 in its New Richmond, Wis., operation.

The upgrades, which began in May 2012 and were completed in December, provide the supplier of process and packaging technology a new vertical form fill seal test facility.

The facility’s two full vertical form fill seal packaging lines allows Bosch to offer extended runs as well as temperature and humidity control that simulates a packing line’s individual environment, according to a news release.

Eric Aasen, Bosch’s vertical product line manager, said the test facility showcases the company’s ability to handle a variety of fresh produce items through vertical bagging of free-flowing product including blueberries, baby carrots, chopped lettuce and sliced apples.

The machinery can also perform horizontal slow wrapping as well as robotics and secondary packaging, Aasen said.

“At the fresh produce shows, not only did we have customers looking at our bagging capabilities, but they also looked at our inverted horizontal wrappers where you look at making kits,” he said. “You can take an item and add another product to the bag for meal kits.”

Bosch supplies a variety of vertical form fill seal technologies.

Its vertical baggers can produce many pack styles including special bag styles and different opening and reclosure aids on a single machine without adjusting machine height, according to the release.

The flexibility allows manufacturers to easily adjust to changing market demands, according to the release.
