Peter Rabbit packing medjool dates

Peter Rabbit Farms will be packing medjool dates through the end of the year.

The Coachella, Calif.-based shipper has been growing dates for about eight years, but this is only the second year they’ve packed it themselves. Stainless steel packing lines were added in 2012.

“We’re excited about the prospects for medjool dates,” said John Burton, general manager for sales and cooler. “Our trees are going to develop and grow. We should double our volume within the next couple of years.”

Sun World skips peppers from Mexico

Sun World International will not have a Mexico bell pepper deal this winter, said Gene Coughlin, category director for peppers.

“Many factors were involved and it just didn’t seem to work out,” Coughlin said. “We’re better suited to concentrate on the domestic deal.”

Bakersfield, Calif.-based Sun World planned to start its field-grown elongated red peppers – Le Rouge Royale – in the California desert around Nov. 4, said Coughlin. Yellows were to follow a week later. The company, which also offers sweet mini peppers, was transitioning from Oxnard.
