Defense supply contracts awarded to produce firms

Seeking fresh fruit and vegetable distributors to supply military bases and schools, the Department of Defense has awarded about $125 million in contracts to fresh produce companies in recent weeks.

On April 4, Foster Caviness Inc., Colfax, N.C., was awarded a $49.8 million federal contract with the Defense Logistics Agency to supply fresh fruits and vegetables to military bases and some schools in the North Carolina region, according to a Department of Defense website notice. The contract runs until Oct. 3, 2014, according to the website.

A $45 million federal contract for fresh fruit and vegetable supplies was awarded by the Philadelphia-based Defense Logistics Agency on March 28 to Forestwood Farm Inc., Birmingham, Ala. The company will supply fresh fruits and vegetables to military bases in Alabama and Florida and selected schools in the two states through September of next year.

Gulf Coast Produce Distributors, Biloxi, Miss., received a $30-million contract from the Defense Logistics Agency in late March to provide fruits and vegetables to all branches of the military and some schools in Mississippi through September next year. Jacksonville, Fla.-based Garden Wholesale was awarded a $16.8 million contract to supply military bases and schools in Florida through September 2014, according to the Department of Defense website.
