Gills Onions receives accreditation

Gills Onions, Oxnard, Calif., has received SQF 2000 level three accreditation for comprehensive food safety and quality management systems after implementing a food quality plan.

“We understand the reality that other fresh onion choices are available in the marketplace, and we must (prove) that Gills Onions is the right choice for them,” Nelia Alamo, director of sales and marketing, said in a news release. “The Level 3 SQF 2000 certification is just one way we can quantify our commitment to excellence in every aspect of our operations.”

The food quality plan, not required for the first two levels, describes maintenance quality methods, including standard operating procedures and a monitoring system for any inconsistencies that may occur.

The plan also includes a risk analysis and necessary actions should a threat arise.

The SQF certification program, administered by the Safe Quality Food Institute, evaluates food manufacturers on the three-tier system to ensure more-globalized standards in food safety assessments.
