Baldor Specialty Foods Inc., is doing more business in the Baltimore and Washington, D.C., region after expanding operations in Jessup, Md.
Previously, the New York-based Baldor operated from a cross-docking facility, but business is increasing after it purchased a building across the street from the Maryland Wholesale Produce Market in Jessup.
Formerly a fresh-cut operation, the 25,000-square-foot building is considerably larger than the previous facility and includes room for future expansion, said Mike Muzyk, president
Baldor remodeled the facility and installed modern refrigeration it uses to pull orders from the building, he said.
The operation expands the foodservice distributor’s delivery range more into northern Virginia and the Eastern Shore, he said.
Baldor, which also distributes to retailers and wholesalers, also trucks product from its Boston operation to southern Maine.
“There are some great distributors on the Maryland and D.C. markets,” Muzyk said. “They’re looking over their shoulders. Retailers always do that and see what the other guy’s doing. I like to make sure I only see my competitors in my rear-view mirror.”
Baldor completed the renovation in February.
