Courtesy Fresh Produce Association of the Americas Just as west Mexico’s grape season is beginning, new commercial vehicle lanes at the port of entry in Nogales, Ariz., should help speed crossings.
On April 29, U.S. Customs and Border Protection expanded the number of lanes to eight, said Lance Jungmeyer, president of the Fresh Produce Association of the Americas, Nogales.
A temporary inspection dock will handle loads until permanent docks are completed, he said.
When the port upgrade is done, it also will include cooler space to store loads waiting for inspection, Jungmeyer said.
U.S. customs assigned 80 additional officers to the port in the past few weeks, he said, adding that although some of the new staff offsets previous losses, the 80 new officers mean a net gain in staffing.
The Mariposa port expansion began in 2010 and is scheduled to be completed in 2014, according to U.S. customs officials.
