Valley Fig Growers plans to use solar to power its operations.

The Fresno, Calif.-based grower cooperative plans to install a solar array of photovoltaic panels that will generate 60% of its power needs, according to a news release.

Valley Fig GrowersThe system, to be installed by JKB Energy, is expected to substantially reduce costs, according to the release.

Valley Fig Growers’ board of directors approved investing $1.4 million in the 625 kilowatt photovoltaic electrical generation system.

The cooperative plans to install the panels on the roofs of all warehouse buildings.

Construction is set to begin this month, with a completion date in November, according to the release.

“This system married with the process water anaerobic digester we completed several years ago will make Valley Fig Growers a model for other California food processors and will keep us on the cutting edge of the sustainability movement,” Mike Emigh, Valley Fig Growers’ outgoing president, said in the release.

The cooperative’s 25 grower members produce about 40% of the California fig industry, according to the release.
