Global container shipper APL has unveiled a satellite tracking service that can monitor the temperature and humidity of refrigerated cargo.

The company, with U.S. headquarters in Oakland, Calif., designed its Smartemp system to provide real-time data on reefer containers from origin to destination, according to a news release.

A communication module decodes data from a device attached to the container, which records temperature and humidity levels and sends the information via satellite to APL’s central server.

Customers can then retrieve the data from the company’s online portal, according to the release.

Customers can access the data by entering an individual bill of lading or container number, and the information is presented in a table format or exported to an Excel spreadsheet, according to the release.
