Just in time for the 2009 spring/summer vegetable season, Buurma Farms Inc., Willard, Ohio, has converted most of its packing lines to stainless steel, a process that has been ongoing over recent years, and that will raise the company’s food safety profile, said Loren Buurma, co-owner.
“We have few minor lines that haven’t been converted, but we’re not almost 100%,” he said. “Most of the winter guys are working on food safety and traceability.”
Buurma Farms also is in the process of buying new software to improve its traceability capabilities, Buurma said.
Also new at the company this year are new rinse lines.
“We used some last year and were impressed with the results,” Buurma said. “It should give (our products) extended shelf life.”
