Earthcycle Packaging Ltd., the Vancouver, B.C.-based pioneer in sustainable, recyclable and compostable packaging, will debut a new line of trays at the Produce Marketing Associationâs Fresh Summit International Convention & Exposition, Oct. 15-18, in Orlando, Fla.
Earthcycleâs palm fiber trays feature the natural earth color and a new black tray.
The line features the companyâs natural earth color and a new black tray, said Shannon Boase, founder and chief executive officer.
âBlack is the color that was most often requested by our customers,â she said. âThe contrast between the black tray and the produce makes the product pop off the shelf.â
The soybean dye adds little cost to the manufacturing process, but Earthcycle has no plans for other colors.
âSwitching colors is the expensive part, because of the time required to purge the equipment,â Boase said.
For that reason, Earthcycle has dedicated production lines to its original earth color and the new black products.
The trays are designed specifically for fresh produce, Boase said, and may be molded to fit nearly all commodities that benefit from a higher level of protection in shipping, such as tomatoes, avocados, kiwi and stonefruit.
Earthcycleâs palm fiber trays are âbackyard compostableâ and decompose in as little as 90 days.
