(Dec. 11, 11:49 a.m.) Los Angeles-based VBM International Berry LLC, a division of the Giumarra Co., Los Angeles, opened a berry cooling facility, Frigo Berry, in Jalisco, Mexico.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony on Nov. 21 featured guest speakers Emilio Gonzalez, governor of the state of Jalisco, and Alberto Cardenas, national agriculture minister, said company spokeswoman Megan Schulz.
The new 13,000-square-feet facility offers receiving, post-harvest treatment, pre-cooling and distribution of blackberries, blueberries and raspberries.
“The Frigo Berry facility was opened to improve our operational facilities and give us better control of the supply chain,” senior vice president of Giumarra Tim Riley said in an e-mail. “It will allow us to continue supporting our blueberry and blackberry growers in the Guzman area. The benefits of the facility include improved cold storage and post-harvest handling."
Don Corsaro, president of the Giumarra Cos., attended the event, along with VBM directors Eugenio Silva and Juan Ignacio Allende, Schulz said.
